Contact Lenses > Advice and FAQ's

Let’s face it – nature never intended us to stick things in our eyes. But millions of us do it every day – and enjoy the benefits. If you would like to switch to contacts but are feeling a bit uncertain about it or just aren’t sure what’s involved, we’ve put together a list of the questions we are most often asked. If there’s anything we’ve not covered here, send us an email or give us a call.

Are lenses easy to get used to?

Yes. Disposable contact lenses are comfortable to wear almost from the word go – so comfortable you’ll soon forget you’ve got them in. Handling them can take a bit of getting used to but with a few days practice you’ll be popping them in and out with aplomb.

Which are better – disposables or traditional lenses like gas permeables?

These days we find disposables are, in most, cases preferable to traditional lenses. They are easier to get used to, easier to take care of and, because they are changed more frequently, less prone to infection. Having said that, there may be times when traditional lenses are more suitable. We will tell you what’s right for you.

How do I care for my lenses?

With multipurpose solutions. It couldn’t be easier. The same solution cleans your lenses while it’s storing them. We will recommend which brand works best for your type of lenses and we’ll tell you exactly how to use it.

The only other thing to say is that you must follow our instructions to the letter. Absolutely no cheating. Most of the eye problems we see are caused by sloppy contact lens care.

Can I use any brand of solution with my lenses?

No. Different brands work best with different types of lenses. When you collect your lenses we will advise you what to use. After that, if for any reason you want to change brands give us a call and we’ll tell you which are okay for your type of lenses. It’s also important to bear in mind that some people are allergic to certain solutions so it’s not a good idea to chop and change at will. If at any time you experience irritation, come in and see us straightaway.

Which type of contact lenses are the best?

There is no one type of lens which is best - it depends on what’s right for you.

Will my vision be as good as when I’m wearing my glasses?

In most cases you will see just as well as you do with your glasses – and in some cases even better. With contact lenses you get more ‘natural’ vision.

Is there any risk associated with wearing contact lenses?

Clearly, nothing in life is ever one hundred per cent risk free but as long as you look after your lenses properly and follow our instructions to the letter, the risks are minimal.

Can I wear contact lenses if I need bifocals?

Yes. There are several different approaches we can take, all of which will give you good vision.

How much do they cost?

Less than you think! Prices do vary according to which type of lens you have but we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised whichever type you opt for.

How do I pay for them?

If you have disposable lenses you can set up a monthly direct debit scheme that covers the cost of your lenses, regular aftercare appointments, replacement of lost or damaged lenses and entitles you to a discount on solutions.
